On October 21, 2019, Oscar Pistorius was released from a correctional services center in South Africa after serving nine years in prison for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. He has been required to serve out the remainder of his 13-year sentence under correctional supervision.
Pistorius, formerly a double-amputee track star who won gold medals in the Paralympic Games, had been convicted of culpable homicide in the killing of Steenkamp in 2013. He initially appealed the conviction, but has since reached an agreement with prosecutors to serve the remainder of his sentence out of prison.
In a statement, the South Africa Correctional Services Department said, “Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison today having served his sentence. He will remain under the correctional supervision of the Department of Correctional Services with specific conditions.”
Since his release, Pistorius has kept a low profile and has declined to comment on his sentence or the killing of Steenkamp.
